Preventing Wildfires & Fire Safety

Living in Washington state means being mindful of the risk of wildfires, especially during the dry summer months. As an auto shop serving the community, Suburb Service in Lake Forest Park wants to share some tips on preventing wildfires and staying safe in case of fire emergencies.

Preventing Wildfires

Not to get all Smoky Bear on you all, but we can definitely do our part to prevent wildfires! If you’re a nature lover, you likely already know the basics. But auto care is also essential, and it often gets left off the list. Here are some big takeaways:

Follow local fire regulations: Check your local fire regulations and abide by them. This includes checking if there are any burn bans in effect, being careful with campfires or grills, and properly disposing of cigarettes.

Maintain your vehicle: A well-maintained vehicle is less likely to start a fire. Regularly check for leaks in the engine, keep the vehicle clean and debris-free, and check tire pressure.

Park in safe locations: Avoid parking in dry grass or areas with tall vegetation. The hot exhaust pipe can easily ignite these materials.

Cleaning Your Car Covered in Ash

If your car has been covered in ash due to nearby wildfires, it's essential to clean it properly to avoid any damage to the paint or other parts of the car. Here are some steps to follow:

Rinse the car: Using a hose or pressure washer, you can turn off as much of the ash as possible.

Wash the car: Use a car-specific soap and a soft sponge or mitt to wash the car. Avoid dish soap, as it can strip the protective wax layer from the paint.

Dry the car: Use a microfiber towel or chamois to dry the car. Avoid air-drying, as it can leave water spots on the paint.

Smoke can also affect the functioning of your car, as can air quality. Make sure to bring your vehicle in if it’s struggling.
