We hope you and your partner will have a wonderful Valentine’s Day this year! But we want to acknowledge that this is a hard time of year for some of us, socially and mentally. For the single person, St. Valentine’s Day can really stink.
It’s hard enough to find yourself at a place in your life where you are not in a good, healthy relationship, but this holiday seems to point out your loneliness to everyone. It’s a matter of maintaining good mental health and positivity that we must reject the norms and find a way to celebrate by ourselves.
Just because you don’t have a significant other doesn’t mean you should miss out on Valentine’s Day. Here are our top 4 tips for being a lonelyheart at St. Valentine’s Day!
Treat Yo Self! If you had a partner, today would be the day you’d be lavishing them with gifts and treats to let them know you care. You could use that. So treat yourself! Buy yourself something frivolous and lovely that you deserve.
Get your Pets in on the fun. Just because you don’t have a romantic relationship doesn’t mean you don’t have love to honor. Show your pet some love, too.
Show yourself a great night at home. Make or order in something fantastic. Save a show or a movie you’ve wanted to watch for a while and enjoy it. There are loads of love-free options, but if you’re going to watch something romantic, you have every right to do that. If you feel like crying, you can watch Titanic or The Notebook. There’s a very 1990’s film I can recommend if you like ensemble pictures, called Playing By Heart.
Forget the 15th. The 15th is also known as Lonelyhearts Half-Off Chocolate Day. You deserve something special on the 14th that you can savor and enjoy all to yourself without feeling sad about it later. Don’t buy quantity; that will only depress you. Buy quality. I highly recommend Green’s Chocolate, or for dieters, Lily’s.
Most importantly, remember that one of the best things a lonelyheart can do is work on being happy alone because that’s when the right partner always seems to turn up!
