How to Keep Your Pets Safe and Happy During the Coronavirus Pandemic

We've heard about how to keep ourselves safe from the coronavirus pandemic from local and national governments, media outlets, and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)-but what about our furry friends at home? Here's how you can keep your pets safe and happy during COVID-19.

3 Ways to Keep Your Pets Safe and Happy During the Coronavirus Pandemic

Show them love and affection.

Think quarantine has been difficult to navigate? Your pets are struggling through self-isolation too. If you live in an apartment in the city, your pet may be going on limited walks and bathroom breaks. This could lead to them acting out or becoming destructive as they work through their own emotions. During this trying time, your furry friends need all the love and affection you can muster-and they're probably looking for double the attention now that you are at home 24/7.

Find a designated playtime that works for you each day and stick to a schedule. Your pet will eventually get into the groove of your new routine.

Take precautions for you and your pet.

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there's no evidence that dogs and cats in the U.S. have contracted or can spread COVID-19. However, you'll want to be cautious as experts have not yet weighed in on whether pets can carry the virus on their fur similar to how the virus could live on hard surfaces. (The virus has been found to live on hard surfaces for up to three days.)

Wash your hands after you interact with your pet, especially if you take them out on a walk. If you can self-groom your pet at home, that could help eliminate germs inside your home as well.

Keep the treats and essentials stocked.

Be sure to keep pet food, litter, and other items stocked. Your pets' needs are essential, and to keep them in the best shape, you'll want to stick to their regular diet and routine. Still, your pup or kitten may appreciate a few extra treats during this trying time.
