But, how often should you change your brakes? And, what do we mean when we say brakes...don't they come in a few parts? They do-brake pads and rotors-and here's when you should change each.

On average, brake pads need to be replaced ever 40,000 to 60,000 miles depending on the following conditions.
Driving habits
Is your Subaru often used by a new driver? Do you spend a lot of time in stop-and-go traffic? Driving habits, like pushing down hard on the brakes or braking too often, can affect how long your brake pads last. Some drivers are prone to hard stops, while others gently descend to a stop. You may already know this, but the latter will have brakes that last longer. Smooth, gradual braking is ideal-but, we know that sometimes safety calls for an abrupt stop.
Environment and road conditions

Brake pads and rotors are partners. Every time you slow down for a stop sign, they work together to keep your car from rolling on through. But, they don't always wear out at the exact same time. That brings us to a crossroads: do you replace your brake pads and rotors separately or at the same time?
One might think that you'd only replace the worn out component, but because they work in conjunction, it's common to change the pads and rotors at the same time.
Changing the brake pads and not the rotors, may lead to less braking power. (It has to do with the lining of the grooves and some extra wear and tear). Plus, if your brake rotors wear out just a few months after you replace your brake pads, you'll find yourself back in the shop anyway. Wouldn't you rather only pay one labor fee?
