Our Philosophy on Brake Replacement

Do your brakes squeal, grind, or grab? Are you experiencing jerky stops? Is your warning light flashing? It might just be time for a brake system inspection. At Suburb Service, we our customer's safety is a top priority-and, while not the most glamorous car part, brakes are an important part of any working vehicle. Here's our philosophy on brake replacement.

When Should You Change Your Brakes?

For the most part, you can't see your brake system-so it's not always top of mind. Unless a warning light is flashing, you might be inclined to forget your brakes together. But, how often should you change your brakes? And, what do we mean when we say brakes...don't they come in a few parts? They do-brake pads and rotors-and here's when you should change each.

When You Should Change Your Brakes

On average, brake pads need to be replaced ever 40,000 to 60,000 miles depending on the following conditions.

Driving habits

Is your Subaru often used by a new driver? Do you spend a lot of time in stop-and-go traffic? Driving habits, like pushing down hard on the brakes or braking too often, can affect how long your brake pads last. Some drivers are prone to hard stops, while others gently descend to a stop. You may already know this, but the latter will have brakes that last longer. Smooth, gradual braking is ideal-but, we know that sometimes safety calls for an abrupt stop.

Environment and road conditions

Your environment can also affect how quickly you will need brake replacement. Do you live in Seattle proper and walk to work? Do you commute in from the suburbs daily? Or, do you avoid the city altogether? City driving can be harder on your brakes than you might think. Stop-and-go traffic on the highway, plus an abundance of traffic lights, can leave your brakes a little overworked. Seattle dwellers and commuters may require brake replacement earlier than most.

Materials used

You must also consider the materials of your brake pads and rotor. For example, carbon-ceramic brakes last longer than standard metal brakes. Do you still have your original Subaru brakes installed...or did you go to another shop to have your brakes replaced previously? Genuine Subaru brake pads and rotors are made and tested with specific materials that help regulate balance and control while braking. When it's time to replace your brakes, rotors, or pads, you'll want to choose a Subaru-specific repair shop. We know how to calibrate your system and install the proper braking materials to ensure ultimate safety.

Replace Your Brake Pads and Rotors at the Same Time

Brake pads and rotors are partners. Every time you slow down for a stop sign, they work together to keep your car from rolling on through. But, they don't always wear out at the exact same time. That brings us to a crossroads: do you replace your brake pads and rotors separately or at the same time?

One might think that you'd only replace the worn out component, but because they work in conjunction, it's common to change the pads and rotors at the same time.

Changing the brake pads and not the rotors, may lead to less braking power. (It has to do with the lining of the grooves and some extra wear and tear). Plus, if your brake rotors wear out just a few months after you replace your brake pads, you'll find yourself back in the shop anyway. Wouldn't you rather only pay one labor fee?
